Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I have to live to be in this club?
ECMC serves families in
East Contra Costa County, including the cities and communities of Byron,
Discovery Bay, Brentwood, Knightsen, Oakley, Bethel
Island, Antioch, Pittsburg, and Bay Point.
How old do my kids have to be for me to join the club?
Although ECMC’s emphasis is on
children from age zero to five, we certainly don’t turn away members with
older children or members who are expecting their first child.
How much are dues?
Dues are based on a Two Tier system.
For an Online Membership in which the newsletter is available online, dues
are $35.00 per year. Should you prefer a hard copy of the newsletter mailed
to your home, then dues for a Full Membership would be $50.00 per year. Dues
are payable in
full when you join and are nonrefundable.
What kinds of activities do you feature?
Our activities fall loosely
into two categories. For example, moms and kids participate in field trips,
playgroups, socials, stroller walks and various other events. For times when you need time away from your
kids, we feature moms-only activities like Mom's Night Out, Book Club, and the Reel
Women’s Movie Night Club.
I just want a playgroup for my child. Do I still have to pay dues?
Yes. ECMC is a not-for-profit
club and dues cover supplies and services such as our monthly newsletters,
the club voice mail, and liability insurance. Paying your dues supports
every member of the club and helps subsidize other activities. Please consider attending other functions as well
as our playgroup—you want to get the maximum value from your dues,
and it’s fun to meet other moms!
How are playgroups organized?
When you become a paid member
of ECMC, a club playgroup coordinator will contact. She will attempt to
match your and your child(ren)’s schedule to that of an open playgroup, or
work with you and other members to create a new playgroup. The more flexible
you are, the sooner you can be matched to a group.
Once assembled, ECMC’s
playgroups are self-run. Each group selects a representative who is asked to
attend a representatives’ meeting once or twice a year, and she may be
responsible for organizing and distributing the playgroup’s schedule. Most
groups meet weekly, although a few meet biweekly; some groups are
age-oriented, and some are open to all ages. We ask that every playgroup
host an open play date once a year.
How do I join the YahooGroups mailing list?
When you become a paid member
of ECMC, and give us your email address, the club’s YahooGroups list
moderator will invite you to join the discussion list, or you go to
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ecmc and request membership from the list
moderator. Recent topics have included places to hold birthday parties in
East County, opinions on local merchants (carpet cleaners, jump house
rentals), as well as HMO’s.
I don’t see <this activity> listed…
We can’t emphasize enough that
this club is what you make of it. If there is nothing you’d like to do, put
something you are interested in on the calendar and host it yourself! This
club takes its ideals from Kate Hoepke’s “Nurturing the Nurturer” – in other
words, it is YOUR club, not just your kid’s club. If you’d like to
host a stroller walk, an open playgroup at the park, a penny poker night or
anything you think people might be interested in, call a Board member and
put it on the calendar!
I work during the day. What can ECMC offer me?
We host family parties,
outings and socials on weekends, and events like
Meet & Greets and Mom’s Night Out occur on weekday nights. The easiest way to attend
a weekday or evening function is to host one yourself!
